Ragtime: Doctorow an unjustly forgotten
Ecco un altro pezzo di grande letteratura fuori catalogo. Fatto curioso, non è neppure considerato al livello che gli spetterebbe, infatti è molto frequente vederlo sulle bancarelle a prezzi stracciati proprio perché non sembra neppure essere molto apprezzato dai lettori. Ma è un errore: secondo me si tratta di un gran bel romanzo, uno di quelli che non make you regret the great American writers of the past that makes you think that there are still big overseas pens instead of Europe, especially Italy, which is stationary except for rare cases such as those sultry July days where everything is still and the slightest breeze blows.
But back to Ragtime. A historical novel, epic, starring a rich white family at the dawn of World War I, full of twists, love drama, escape without falling into the easy trap of feuilletton to keep the reader glued to the pages. It tells the tragic America, full of contradictions and poverty, the true protagonist of the book, and just represents the Ragtime and its soundtrack, music compelling, catchy, syncopated, which breaks down the concepts of time in classical music.
It 's very similar in some ways to Michael Kohlhaas by Heinrich von Kleist, another little masterpiece, which Doctorow was accused of plagiarism. But as a writer, artist, singer has not been influenced by his readings in the composition of their works without giving up to create a personal style? Read it ... and let me know ...
